 | | Artist | Jordan Ewert | | Gender | Male | | Status | Semi-professional photographer | | Country | United-States | | Influence | I am primarily interested in photography and consider it my strongest area of expertise. I like to work with concepts, themes, and narratives. I'm not interested in pictures that look pretty, beauty for the sake of beauty alone is mental masturbation.
I'm interested with the dark side of human nature and our deepest desires.
I'm influenced by books on psychology more than anything else. I do look at other artists but not as much as you might think. Besides books and artists, I usually pull inspiration from everywhere I can get it: experience, movies, people, and music.
I'm not usually "thinking" consciously when I'm building a series. They usually happen in bursts of inspiration, which quite often comes when I least expect it.
I would like to raise awareness in a profound and artistic way. That's it. I don't have the answers to your problems but I love to hear about them.
More and more I find myself in unfamiliar territory. I enjoy studying human behavior and thinking of ways to do a series about it.
Some examples of this I have already worked on would be high school violence (school's out for the summer), murder (this charming man), duality in beauty (part monster), binging and eating disorders (I'm Not Sweet, Just Desperate), rape (survival & replication), and the loss of youth (beauty queen/trainwreck).
On a more positive note, there is a lot of my work that has to do with attraction. I have been fascinated with attraction for years and began studying evolutionary psychology a few years ago.
Books like David Buss's Murderer Next Door, Nancy Etcoff's Survival of the Prettiest, Matt Ridley's The Red Queen, and Richard Dawkins The God Delusion have inspired me and had an effect on my thinking/way of life. The music that inspires me would have to be Ulver, Bass Communion, NIN, Sigur Ros, Norma Jean's "Bless the Martyr and Kiss the Child," Agalloch, and Piano Magic. | | Site | http://undoingautumn.com/ | | Alternate site | http://unrealconceptions.com/ |
| Information | I was born in Osaka, Japan on December 9th, 1985 but only lived there for about two months. I lived in Peoria, IL until I went to high school in Austin, MN in 2000. The best experience from high school was my art classes like photography, drawing, and painting. There was not much difference in my art from everyone else until I took myself seriously senior year. I was nominated for artist of the year but did not win because lack of experience. The understanding of having someone else win pushed me to work much harder and take myself more seriously. I graduated high school in 2004. In the fall of 2007 I enrolled at Stout University, WI because of the art programs and am still attending. | |
